The Pienza Duomo stands on a site where the ancient parish church of Santa Maria used to be in Pope Pius II's home village of Corsignano. The Duomo is conveniently located just next to the Palazzo Piccolomini, the residence of the Piccolomini family.

Not far from Siena, in the middle of the famous Val d'Orcia, this UNESCO World Heritage Site enchants above all with its wonderful old town, considered to be the ideal Renaissance city.

La cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, Duomo di Pienza, fu progettata da Bernardo Rossellino e consacrata nel 1462. The primitive structure dates back to 1075, but the façade as it is was modified in 1463. The two majestic towers are original only in their lower part. The right tower was modified in 1532 by the council, that had the belfry window carried out, and also obtained the bishops permission to put a clock in it. The left one was the true belfry, and originally had a three-mullioned window on three.

Pienza's historic town center revolves around the Piazza Pio II and the stunning Duomo Santa Maria di Assunta. Renaissance on the outside and gothic within, the church was reconstructed according to Pope Pius II's wishes to make Pienza a Renaissance town. The square is quite small and hugged by some of Pienza's other principal buildings.
