It traces the River Neath and takes you past four waterfalls, beginning with the dramatic Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf (Upper Gushing Falls). The trail finishes at the village of Pontneddfechan. Waterfall Country (or sometimes Waterfalls Country) is an English name often given to the Vale of Neath in South Wales. The tourist area around the head of the valley has an unusually large number of publicly accessible waterfalls.

1. The Elidir Trail from Pontneddfechan Distance: 7km round trip Starting Point: Park near the Angel Inn in Pontneddfechan village Time: 2 - 3 hours This walk begins near the Angel Inn, in Pontneddfechan village. There are public toilets at the start of the trail.

The first waterfall (Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf) is about 15 minutes down the trail. There is an optional short detour to see the impressive Sgwd Gwladus waterfall. You can turn around there or continue down to Pontneddfechan.

Not far beyond is the most spectacular, Sgwd Ddwli Isaf or Lower Gushing Falls, where the river drops about 30 feet into a briefly cliff-lined gorge, then in another quarter of a mile the trail arrives at Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf, Upper Gushing Falls, a broader, curtain-like waterfall above a large pool.

A little further upstream the water cascades over Sgwd Ddwli Isaf and Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf (the Lower and Upper Gushing Falls) which after heavy rain, truly live up to their name. From here you can continue on to the picnic area at Pont Melin-Fach or retrace your steps back to Pontneddfechan. Gunpowder trail. Distance - 1.5 miles. Grade - Very moderate

A short distance further on, a small trail will branch off to your right leading you to the fifth and final waterfall on this hike - Sgwd Ddwli Uchaf.
